Fished the Kells Blackwater today and had a very enjoyable day. A lot of frost around first thing in the morning and took a while for the day to heat up and the frost to disappear but still managed to catch some nice trout. Finished up with a dozen with two trout about a 1.5lbs each and another around the 1lb mark, the rest were between 8 and 11''. All on nymphs except one which I managed to get on the dries. The trout were not looking up as absolutely no hatch today, no large dark olives and not surprised with all the frost this morning. This a cracking brown trout river and looking forward to when the sedges are up and the big boys come out to play The Kells club have done cracking work developing and enhancing this river and it's one of the practice venues for the World Youth Fly Fishing Championships being held in Ireland this year. Any trout anglers out there should give this river a visit, you'll be glad you did.

It's definately my favourite trout river - I spent a couple of days finding there a few years ago and last year. I remember catching trout after trout, all over a pound, in the pitch dark on sedges - couldn't see anything just striking when I heard a splash. Great river

It was bloody cold yesterday, warmed up later on but the water was still bitter cold. Know all about the cold as I took a few topples over rocks which you can't see as the water has a brown tinge to it. French nymphed horse, mainly using size 16-18 jig hook nymphs, in the faster and slighty deeper water fished with size 14 jigs but was getting caught up on the bottom and rocks in the shallower water so smaller nymphs were mainly the way to go. There was one nice run below Maudlins Bridge where I caught two 1.5 lb trout in deeper pockets of water just below a group of big rocks/groynes in the river. The club have done a great job on this river. No photos YP, forgot to bring the camera with me.
Stevie can't wait til the sedge hatches start, plenty of 1lb trout caught during sedge time. Some pools further up river you have the chance of catching pigs of trout (3lb+) in the evenings during the sedge hatch.
